  • I remember back in college when I was deep into nihilism; I discovered this book called “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. And ever since then my life took a complete U-turn. I mean you cannot be a nihilist and then read books like “Tuesdays with Morrie” where the author makes you believe how lovely life is, and why you shouldn’t take it for granted.

For One More Day A Powerful Book About Love And Hope

I can very easily say that Mitch Albom saved me from treading the path of taking life for granted. After reading “Tuesdays with Morrie,” I became a sucker for life! Well, that may sound a bit exaggerated but to tell you honestly, I did fall in love with life and how insane mankind can get. I also realized one thing after reading that book – and that is I needed to read all other books by Mitch Albom. So, I did. I not only read all his books, but I also read his website.

I loved reading all his books, but “For One More Day” skyrocketed my respect and adoration for the author to some other level. Rarely you will find people who love people to their fullest. They don’t just see their flaws and mistakes. They see their roots. They see them on a very intimate level. Most of us end up judging others by just having a look at someone’s surface. But Mitch Albom completely ignores the surface, he goes in deeper and finds out why a person behaves a certain way.

“For One More Day” is a book for those hurting. It’s like a healing potion for so many, who want to spend just one more day with their lost loved ones. And this book is essential for those who are either taking their lives, or their loved ones for granted. I wonder how can a book be so beautiful and haunting at the same time? The plot of the book revolves around Charley Benetto, who chooses his father over his mother. His father told him, “You can be a mama’s boy or a daddy’s boy, but you can’t be both.” And hence, Charley chooses to be a daddy’s boy and chooses to be with his father. However, when Charley reaches his adolescence, his father abandons him and disappears. This leaves Charley completely devastated, and he eventually grows up to be a broken man.

Even his married life doesn’t go well. He falls prey to alcoholism and spends most of his time living in regret and guilt. Furthermore, he also ends up losing his job. After which, he leaves his family. But Charley hits rock bottom when he discovers that his own daughter did not invite him to her wedding. This incident pushes him over the edge and he becomes utterly suicidal. He doesn’t see the point in living anymore. He thinks about how he lost the chance to walk his daughter down the aisle. He sulks, thinking about how he will never be able to put his daughter’s hand into his son-in-law’s hand.

He decides to visit his old house for one last time, and there he finds his mother, who shouldn’t be there. He meets her in an astonishing way. His mother welcomes him warmly, takes him in her arms, and cooks for him. Everything seems surreal to Charley but nevertheless, he appreciates every single moment of their meeting. He reminisces all those times from his childhood when his mother saved him, and how he could never take a stand for his mother. Through this book, Mitch Albom shows you the beautiful relationship between a mother and son. There are so many things that a mother does for her child but never makes a big deal about doing them. A mother’s love is of its own kind, and nothing can ever replace it.

Mitch Albom’s relationship with his mother inspired him a lot while writing this book. Several incidents in the book are inspired by his own childhood where his mother saved him. I feel like “For One More Day” is a must-read for everyone. Because so often in our lives, we end up taking those for granted who have been there for us all along. Sometimes, we just have to take a moment, pause, and reflect on our lives. We need to appreciate our loved ones, be there for them, and most importantly be grateful.

Also, the book is written in very smooth and simple language. Hence, even beginners can read this book easily. I highly recommend this to each one of you. Some books are way above any genres and classifications. It doesn’t matter what kind of books you like. “For One More Day” is a book for everyone. So, what are you waiting for?
