To begin with, writing apps provide you with a good interface that makes you work more efficiently. These apps also help improve your grammar and suggest ways to make your writing more concise and professional. Over the years, I have stumbled upon several writing apps. Here are the best book writing apps and software that you must try to improve your writing skills and have fun while working on your projects.

    1. Grammarly

    Grammarly Proofreading

Grammarly will be life-changing if you need more confidence in your writing. Grammarly helps you improve your writing skills by offering real-time suggestions. The app will help you find grammatical errors and correct them. Besides errors, Grammarly helps rewrite and rephrase sentences to make them more precise and concise. It removes redundancy from your writing and lets you quickly communicate your point. Grammarly also suggests synonyms for repetitive words. You can check our detailed Grammarly review as well.

If you are a professional and find it hard to explain a concept in simple terms to your readers, then Grammarly will help you break down complicated sentences into easy-to-read ones. Grammarly has a free plan offering basic writing suggestions and tone detection. Besides the free program, there is a premium plan (for individuals) and a business plan (for teams) for which you must pay. I highly recommend Grammarly. It will make your life so easy! 2. Google Docs

    Google Docs - Documents

I swear by Google Docs. It’s easy to use, has a sophisticated user interface, and FREE! You only need a Google account, and you can get started now. You can quickly get spelling and grammar suggestions by clicking on the tools menu. There is also a voice typing option available, which is unique. You can organize and structure your document by inserting tables, images, dropdown arrows, lines, footnotes, headers, footers, page numbers, etc.

Many formatting options are also available to make your Doc look presentable. Google Docs is outstanding for collaborative projects as well. You can share the Google doc with anyone easily. You can add comments, see in real-time what the other person is doing on the Doc, and communicate in the chat box. My favorite part is that you can work on your Doc offline, which is a boon. It’s an excellent writing app for everyone.Β

    3. Microsoft Word

    Microsoft Word

Do I even need to introduce this one? Microsoft Word is the OG writing app. We have grown up using Microsoft Word. To produce a professional quality document, you must resort to Microsoft Word. Word is one of the most universally used software applications even today. From corporate offices to other institutions, all of them use Microsoft Word. You will find several tools to make your document look sharp and structured, such as font size, style, alignment, bullet points, etc.

You can insert tables, graphs, charts, headers, footers, shapes, etc. Several design templates and a Page Layout option are also available to maintain margins, lines, columns, orientation, and spacing. You also get spell check and grammar suggestions and the thesaurus option, which is valuable. One of the most significant advantages of using Microsoft Word is that its interface is free of distractions. You can use Word without the internet; hence, no mindless internet surfing, my friend!

    4. Scrivener

    Scrivener

Scrivener will become your favorite if you are an author, journalist, lawyer, or student. If your work requires you to brainstorm, prepare many notes and references, and string them together, then you must try Scrivener. Scrivener is the perfect application for writing, researching, and arranging. Scrivener allows you to break your long manuscript into small manageable chunks and stitch everything together.

If you are a novelist, you can write chapters, paragraphs, acts, or scenes in different documents, and Scrivener will put all the pieces together with its innovative technique. The Corkboard on Scrivener is impressive, as you can work with index cards, which is great for planning. You can also open up to four different documents in the same window, which is useful when transcribing from another document or referring to your research repeatedly.Β

    5. Final Draft

    Final Draft

Final Draft will be your holy grail if you are a screenwriter. Final Draft is the industry’s best screenwriting software. Famous filmmakers like James Cameron, Nancy Meyers, Aaron Sorkin, Guillermo del Toro, and JJ Abrams use Final Draft and recommend it to be used for screenplay writing. There are over three hundred templates on Final Draft for Screenplays, Plays, Comics, Teleplays, Graphic Novels, etc. Features of Final Draft include Collaboration Tool, Format Assitant, Text to Speech, Index Cards, Spell Checking, and Night Mode. However, one of the best features of Final Draft is that you can import a PDF, and it becomes fully editable!

    6. Apple Pages

    Apple Pages

Apple Pages is considered a competition to Microsoft Word. However, both of them are different. If you are a Mac user, I recommend using Apple Pages as it’s free and offers all its features. You can create various documents, such as brochures, letters, business contracts, etc. You can choose from an array of pre-designed templates.

One of my favorite features is that you can insert a video or audio into your document and play it. If you want to self-publish a book, you can do that easily by using a book template and customizing it by adding images, text, etc. You can then publish the document into an ePub file. Other features like iCloud sharing, Language Translation, Handwriting Conversion, etc., make it one of my favorite writing apps.Β

    7. Storyist

    Storyist

Several novelists like Michael Brandman and Kristen McKenzie recommend using Storyist for writing manuscripts and screenplays. Storyist has a robust text editor with all the necessary tools. The ready-made templates help you to start working on your manuscript or project without worrying about formatting. You can create a rough sketch of the manuscript with index cards. All your writing projects are stored in the cloud, so you can access your document whenever and wherever you want. With Storyist, you can focus on telling your story without any distractions.

    ProWritingAid

If you are a blogger or a content writer, you will find ProWritingAid very useful. Gone are the days when writing with proper grammar was enough. 9. Hemingway Editor

    Hemingway Editor App

Hemingway Editor is a fantastic writing app for short-form pieces, which is why copywriters swear by this app. The app helps you write according to grade readability. Hemingway will help you make your write-up more crisp. It will help you identify and suggest you shorten dense and complex sentences. It will tell you which sentences are difficult to read so you can split them and make them more readable. The Hemingway Online Editor is free to use. However, the Hemingway Editor App is a premium tool that will cost you $19.99 (one time.)Β

    10. Reedsy Book Editor

    Reedsy Book Editor

Reedsy Book Editor is a great writing tool for authors and book editors. It is designed especially for working on manuscripts. First and foremost, the app’s interface is simple and easy to use. There is a Goals & Insights tab on the app where you can set a deadline or a word count target. Reedsy Book Editor has a fantastic collaborative writing feature that helps you work with your client, co-author, or editor in real time.

There is a built-in spell check, and Reedsy is compatible with the Grammarly Chrome extension. You can export your manuscript into PDF, ePub, or Mobi file types. Reedsy also has a marketplace, so if you are looking for an editor, you can quickly connect with an expert and get them on board. Reedsy is a tremendous collaborative writing app for writing and editing manuscripts.Β Β

A good writing app with which you are compatible will make your work so much easier and enjoyable. Just like you need a good quality pen and paper to write beautifully with your hand, you need a good writing app to help you work more efficiently.Β
