Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a humorous book series started by Jeff Kinney in 2004, narrating mostly the mishaps in the life of our protagonist – Greg Heffley. Greg fills in a journal that tells us about his day and life, his hilarious family and mostly dumb friends, and any book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series is sure to crack you up!
The 13th book of this series, titled The Meltdown released in 2018 and has quickly become a bestseller, owing to fans of the series worldwide. While the book classifies into the ”Children’s Books” genre, there are numerous adults who enjoy reading the tales of this Wimpy Kid, myself being one of them.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Meltdown (Review)
The Meltdown begins with Greg finding it hard to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine in their neighborhood because it is Winter! He considers himself old-fashioned to think it should be warm in summer and cold in summer, and while he is aware of global warming, he isn’t ready to take any blame because he ‘just GOT here.’ One surely resonates with the ideas of the book when Greg puts forth his idea of going to hibernate until spring. The warm Winter soon takes a turn towards being cold and colder, and what follows is how Greg and everyone around deal with the cruel weather – and eventually also have a fantastic war between the children on the hill and the lower Surrey Street!
Jeff Kinney’s simple writing with simple yet extremely funny illustrations makes for a warm and cozy read for all ages. Greg is a character with whom probably everyone can relate, especially when he understands.
“âĶI’m just not the HERO type. Trust me, I’m glad there are people like that out there, but the world needs guys like ME, too.”
Such a funny yet thought-provoking idea can only be conceived by a wacky character like Greg Heffley. This book has its moments, but viewed in the light of the previous books of Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series, this book seems to be less entertaining and missing the previous spark. Also, the whole story seems a bit repetitive, which is, however, understandable considering that there have already been 12 books in the series. We also do not have a lot of moments with Greg’s family, and they are the funniest characters in the series- a bit more inclusion would have certainly done better. This certainly is a 4 star read, fit to accompany anyone on a lazy reading day. You can get the book here! ð
