Perhaps, the only real thing everyone wants is joy—joy, which is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. And at the end of the day, everything that we do is a way of experiencing joy. But like everything, joy seems to be fleeting as well. In one moment, we experience joy, and in the next moment, it’s gone. And from there, the endeavor to find joy begins all over again. Isn’t this the story of our lives? But is there a way that we can lock joy inside us and never let it go? Can we experience it all the time? If you want to know the answers to these questions, then you will have to read Sadhguru’s book “Inner Engineering: A Yogi’s Guide to Joy”. Over 2.5 lakh copies of this book have already been sold, making this book a New York Times Bestseller as well. This book has been published in over fourteen languages across the world.

Sadhguru’s book is a great success undoubtedly, but more than the success, what fascinated me the most about this book is its approach. There are tons of self-help books in the market that talk about self-improvement, transforming yourself, but rarely will you find a book that actually shows you how to do all of that. In his book ‘Inner Engineering’ Sadhguru walks you through the entire process of actually engineering your mind for joy. Like the title suggests, this book is literally a yogi’s guide to joy for the common people.

There are a lot of things that we want to achieve in life. Our dreams and ambitions keep us alive and moving. We wake up every single morning, working harder than before to turn our dreams into our reality. All of us have a dream life of our own that will bring us the highest levels of happiness, and we keep hustling to reach those levels. We think about our future so much that we forget that the present is running out, and our present is all we have right now. Then why do we take our present for granted all the time? In fact, the future that we think about so obsessively will also become our present one day.

The problem is – we have linked our joy with things and experiences. So, until we get those things and live those experiences, joy continues to be unreachable. It’s always out of our reach because human nature is such that no amount of things and experiences will ever be enough. It will always wish for more, and therefore, joy will always be out of the league. And this is why we need to engineer our minds in a way that joy becomes independent. It stops depending on things and experiences. Once we are able to engineer our minds in the said pattern, we will be able to reach the state of limitless joy – the ultimate treasure for humanity.

Honestly, you can easily summarize this book in just one simple sentence, and that is – “the way out is in.” This one sentence encompasses so much wisdom that it has the ability to liberate you from all the sufferings of this world. We spend so much time observing our external world that we forget that our internal world demands the most attention. There is a saying that your external world is the reflection of your internal world. The moment you fix the dents inside your soul, you will completely transform your external world outlook. This is why, before engineering your external world, engineer your inner world.

Sadhgurus Guide To Engineer Your Mind For Joy

When it comes to engineering anything, we need science and technology. Without science, we cannot engineer anything, not even our own inner world. And this is why we all need to learn the science of yoga. Once we learn the science of yoga, we can use its technologies to construct and engineer a mind that is capable of everlasting joy.

The first part of the book is theoretical – it consists of Sadhguru’s personal experiences, early-life stories, and anecdotes. He also talks about designing your own destiny and how you can get rid of the burden of boundaries. In the second part of the book, he has shared the practical lessons by doing which you can engineer your mind for joy. He has shared sadhanas (sadhana = practice) that will bring you closer to the state of constant joy. He has talked about our body, mind, energy, and joy in full detail so that all your concepts regarding the science of yoga are clear.

Personally, I enjoyed this book thoroughly. But this book is much more than just an enjoyable read. It’s a guide that has the ability to provide you so much wisdom only if you read it with faith and an open mind. The sadhanas are actually very effective. I tried all of them while I was reading this book, and frankly, they actually work so effectively. Just to give you a little idea, one of the sadhanas was to keep your back straight all the time for one week. I did the sadhana, and within the first four days, I saw a drastic change in my mood and behavior. It’s difficult to explain the change in words. It’s something that you can solely experience once you do it yourself.
